Tropical Street Skating in the Caribbean: Color Rico - Part 1
The is apart of a short film series made by Redbull and Sebasien Abes
The
overall theme of the documentary is to help the viewer understand what its like
to skate in the Caribbean, in this case Puerto Rico. It covers both positives and negatives of skating there. For example
they talk about the road surfaces in general being well maintained which Is
important when skating and they also talk about how colourful the city is.“Mix of being a concrete metropolis and a tropical island,
its just beautiful”
Animation is used when describing Puerto Rico's history, this helps the viewer understand more about the country. Even though it works well with this documentary i don't want to use animation when i make one.
The documentary is filmed perfectly with a cinematic
effect, which makes the city look even more beautiful. Its filmed in colour to
emphasise how colourful Puerto Rico is. Natural light is used throughout to
give a more natural look except at the end when the sun goes down a small LED
light is mounted onto the camera rig, to make sure the viewer can see the subject.
The story is told via
interviews of the skaters that went on the trip. It creates a personal
connection with the audience due to how casual it is.
The creative intro shows each skater that is on the
trip along with their name and also them doing a trick. This helps the views recognise the skater.
Continuity editing
is used during most tricks in the documentary, showing the viewer the beautiful
scenery as well as the skater’s trick. This type of editing is not common in
skateboarding videos but I feel it works well in this documentary because of
its cinematic look. Also this documentary breaks the conventions of a normal
skateboarding video by showing more behind the scenes like preparations for the
up coming trick e.g. waxing ledges. This helps brake the forth wall and engages
the viewer.
